Method to estimate ISCO and ring-down frequencies in binary systems and consequences for gravitational wave data analysis

چکیده
Recent advances in the description of compact binary systems have produced gravitational waveforms that include inspiral, merger and ring-down phases. Comparing results from numerical simulations with those of post-Newtonian (PN), and related, expansions has provided motivation for employing PN waveforms in near merger epochs when searching for gravitational waves and has encouraged the development of analytic fits to full numerical waveforms. The models and simulations do not yet cover the full binary coalescence parameter space. For these yet un-simulated regions, data analysts can still conduct separate inspiral, merger and ring-down searches. Improved knowledge about the end of the inspiral phase, the beginning of the merger, and the ring-down frequencies could increase the efficiency of both coherent inspiral-merger-ring-down (IMR) searches and searches over each phase separately. Insight can be gained for all three cases through a recently presented theoretical calculation, which, corroborated by the numerical results, provides an implicit formula for the final spin of the merged black holes, accurate to within 10% over a large parameter space. Knowledge of the final spin allows one to predict the end of the inspiral phase and the quasinormal mode ring-down frequencies, and in turn provides information about the bandwidth and duration of the merger. In this work we will discuss a few of the implications of this calculation for data analysis. ar X iv :0 80 1. 42 97 v2 [ gr -q c] 2 9 Ja n 20 08

A Decision between Bayesian and Frequentist Upper Limit in Analyzing Continuous Gravitational Waves
Given the sensitivity of current ground-based Gravitational Wave (GW) detectors, any continuous-wave signal we can realistically expect will be at a level or below the background noise. Hence, any data analysis of detector data will need to rely on statistical techniques to separate the signal from the noise. While with the current sensitivity of our detectors we do not expect to detect any tru...

متن کاملGravitational-wave data analysis using binary black-hole waveforms
While the inspiral and ring-down stages of the binary black-hole coalescence are well-modelled by analytical approximation methods in general relativity, the recent progress in numerical relativity has enabled us to compute accurate waveforms from the merger stage also. This has an important impact on the search for gravitational waves from binary black holes. ‘Complete’ binary black-hole wavef...
متن کاملThe Influence of Quark Matter at High Densities on Binary Neutron Star Mergers
We consider the influence of potential quark matter existing at high densities in neutron star interiors on gravitational waves (GW) emitted in a binary neutron star merger event. Two types of equations of state (EoS) at zero temperatures are used, one describing pure nuclear matter, the other nuclear matter with a phase transition to quark matter at very high densities. Binary equilibrium sequ...

Aims. The detection and measurement of gravitational-waves from coalescing neutron-star binary systems is an important science goal for ground-based gravitational-wave detectors. In addition to emitting gravitational-waves at frequencies that span the most sensitive bands of the LIGO and Virgo detectors, these sources are also amongst the most likely to produce an electromagnetic counterpart to...
